building a gate post

I am linking up with Sandra at www.Sawdustgirl.com today!  And yes Sandra, we have sawdust everywhere still!

We have been completely enjoying our new "penthouse suite" known as the loft bed in Carter's room.  We play up there most afternoons after school, and it's really a cozy space.   One issue we see is here:

Well, two issues: First, the dog is scared to death. Won't go up on her own, and once up, just begs to come down.

Second: If friends sleep over, we're thinking they might roll out of the bed!  Carter's sleeping area is to the left, and is within the areas that have rails.  But a friend would sleep on the other end, and if he rolls over during the night, he just might roll....out!  Yikes!  That wouldn't be good at all.  Can you imagine that phone call?  No, me either.

So we're building a gate.  Have I ever built a gate before?  No, but I've watch someone build a gate before!   I'm planning on copying the gate design from our back yard fence.  And as with every other project I've taken on, I copy, research, plan and then just go with it.  I found one plan here:  www.buildeazy.com.  I plan to try their free plans, and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.  Their plans and instructions look really good and easy to follow!

Of course, this is for a 6' high outside fence post, but the general idea is the same, and I think it will work really well adapted for our needs.

And I gave in: as much as I like brush nickel and silver tones, I bought shiny gold hinges and a latch, just like the boy loves.
