Unlikely Friendships, Good Reading

We struggle to find things that the boy loves to read; I struggle to find something I enjoy reading along with him.  We've had more luck in recent years when we realized he love non-fiction more than fiction, and short stories more than chapter books.  But we still struggle to get him to read for his full 30 minutes per day, and are always on the lookout for great new books that he will love.

Enter this winner: We are absolutely loving this book.  On the first day of school we went looking for a book to celebrate, and first stop is the animal section.  After having little luck in the childrens' section, we headed for the adult animal books.  First draw was the monkey on the cover (we are still in awe and love with our friends from Costa Rica).

Secondly, the stories are short, and have pictures.  Double score!

Thirdly, we are hooked.  These are the sweetest stories of, of course, unlikely friendships in the animal world.
Prey and predator, moms and babies of other species, animals from different continents; what draws these stories together is the heart-warming draw of the these animals.  Making friends of natural enemies, loving an animal that has no mother, providing comfort to a species that is normally prey.

Instead of having to set the timer, we are fighting over who gets to pick the next story, and how many we have time to read before bedtime has well passed.

Being an avid reader, I'm always thrilled to find a book the boy loves, we love, and has uplifting stories with great messages on top of it.

 This one has it all.

Happy reading!
