The "ahhhas" and the "ehhhs" of DIY....or "How to not paint a cabinet orange..."

Sometimes you hit it....like another project I'm still working on and loving the outcome(aahhhhhh).  And sometimes there's a miss (ehhh) along the way.  You don't hate it, but you don't love it either. It's not right. And you don't know what to do to fix it. This is one of those "ehhhh" projects for me:

This is a cabinet I "inherited" from my mom's house this summer (that used to be in my Pop-pops house: read more about my grandfather here). 

Here's the first test of some different colors I have in the house: reds and rusts.  I added white to each in larger amounts to see what the lighter colors would look like.   I finally decided on the Sherwin Williams "Jalapeno" color I have in the basement (a reddish/rust/terracotta mix) and love it there.  So that's what you see at the top. Hmmm.

Or maybe it's just too orange in a green room; or maybe once I change out the curtains to this fabric that pulls the colors together it won't stand out so much as in Oh my look at that orange cabinet in the corner of her green room! kinda of way.


Or maybe it will. And I will have to have another bright idea and try again.


But so goes the way of DIY. There's no cost in this, only time and brainpower.


Time will tell; I do like the cabinet there, and I do have big plans for the door in another room. Who knows, maybe it will just be painted all tan and have colorful baskets in there.  Or maybe I ask my trusty son (who has great taste) and get a "I really just liked it with the door on it" kind of answer.  Greeeaaaaat.
