Maybe your husband isn't like mine, but I find mine to be the hardest person to buy gifts for (except this year, as I said, dear son has him nailed, and we are all done!....more on that later...we're so excited!).
So I wanted to share a gift idea I did for him years ago that might work for you, but first, you'll need a little background. My husband is his parents' only boy, and it took us 15 years to have our own son, long after most family had given up that we even wanted children, so he was a huge surprise to them all. My father-in-law was so happy for us, of course, but also that there was a boy in the family "to carry on the family name".
As I mentioned a few posts ago, my father-in-law passed away when my son was one. We visited him in the hospital about a week before he died (not knowing at all he was near the end of his life). It was just the four of us: him, me, my husband and my son. He commented on how all the "Mr. G's" were in one room together, and how happy that made him (and he adored his grandson, as he did all of his grandchildren). At that moment, the idea for my gift to my husband popped in my head. I had no idea I would be giving it to him for Father's day after his dad had passed away.
It was a little tricky to work out, but I'll tell you how I went about it. I had the photo of my FIL and my son, but not a good one of my husband. I went to the frame shop anyway, and had the mat cut for the sizes I had, and took all the frame pieces with me.
Then I found a calligrapher (just a blind call from the phone book, but she was awesome!) and told her what I needed. I took the mat the frame shop had cut, and had the calligraphy done. I gave it to Brad for Father's day that year, with everything but his photo, and we went that morning and had his picture taken. A week later, I had everything put together by the frame shop and it was done. And it was beautiful.
It all came together. Maybe you have a situation with a father/son/grandson or family generations that you could use this idea, so I wanted to share it.
It is family heirloom quality, and I get chills every time I see it. I know it will hang in my son's house one day.
Happy shopping this season....be creative!
