Summer snippets and derechos and crabcakes and more

It's almost too hot to go to the pool. Really. The "dogs days of summer" have already hit. Cats days too.

Cracked red clay is the best thing growing in our yard; I'm trying so hard to salvage my little walkable plants I planted a few weeks ago, but it's a battle.

While we were way the area was hit by a derecho, a land hurricane.  Our neighborhood did not lose power and suffered no major damage.  Others, 7 days later, are still without power and water. And it's 100 degrees and humid.  Power trucks have been in the area from 18 states.  Our worst loss was my cute little wheelbarrow planter.

There is a giveaway downtown tonight for a $2000 electric guitar signed by our local most famous band guy, Dave Matthews.  My little guitar player would surely like a ticket.  Trying to work on that.

And this...we're working on this.  I remember it so well from my third grade year.
I made some simple flash cards from index cards for practice.  I fought it at nine as hard as he is (although he did good today!)

We spent the Fourth with friends; some human, some of the above variety; more on that and my secret crabcake recipe next later!

I did find this bright spot in the yard;  boy, these guys are tough!

I'll be back on Monday to wrap up our Costa Rica pictures and trip details.  Have a great weekend!
